Our institute is one of the oldest yet most modern music education institutions in Germany. It was established in 1851 as the Schmitt’sche Akademie für Tonkunst. In 2012, due to our modernized curriculum, the Hessen Ministry for Sciences and Culture legally recognized our institute as a state Berufsakademie - University of Cooperative Education. The AfT is located in a modern building complex in a quiet area of Darmstadt with direct public transportation. It has two departments: the Berufsakademie and the City Music School. This proximity provides our Vocal and Instrumental Pedagogy students (Bachelor of Music) with the opportunity for practical experience. We also have pedagogical seminar cooperation with the Evangelische Hochschule Darmstadt, University of Applied Sciences. Our new degree programs, Angewandte Musikalische Kunst (Bachelor of Music) and Musikalische Kultur (Bachelor of Arts), the latter in cooperation with the Technical University, are unique in Europe. Numerous concerts also offer a musically interested student body and local public a comprehensive variety of high quality programs. Thank you for visiting our Website!
